The Audemars Piguet Royal Oak Ref. 15202ST — known in the trade simply as the "Jumbo" or "Extra-Thin" — ran from 2000 to 2022 without a single calibre change. The Cal. 2121, measuring just 3.05 mm in height, carried every variant through two full decades: 39 mm case diameter, 8.1 mm thickness, octagonal steel bezel. At SIHH on 30 March 2000, AP presented 300 inaugural pieces — Grande Tapisserie dial, 0944ST bracelet, single deployant clasp. A fresh start built on the original 5402 of 1972.
## 2012: The Return of the Petite Tapisserie
For the Royal Oak's 40th anniversary, AP reversed a decision made in 2000: the Grande Tapisserie pattern was dropped, replaced by the finer Petite Tapisserie of the original. At the same time, AP brought dial guillochage in-house — Stern Frères no longer supplied it. The new 1240ST bracelet with its double deployant clasp is now widely regarded as the better fit on the wrist. Ref. 15202ST.OO.1240ST.01 in Bleu Nuit Nuage 50 became the definitive variant, and the first-generation Grande Tapisserie pieces have since earned a reputation as sought-after early examples.
## Discontinued in 2022 — and Why That's Driving the Price
After 22 years in production, AP discontinued the 15202ST to mark the Royal Oak's 50th anniversary. Its successor is the Ref. 16202ST, powered by the new Cal. 7121. The production halt makes the 15202ST a closed chapter: since Q4 2019, AP has issued random serial numbers, making reliable dating no longer possible. For the secondary market, that means a strictly finite supply of pieces whose provenance can be fully documented.

AP Royal Oak is one of the most coveted and most counterfeited luxury watches. The distinctive octagonal bezel with 8 screws and the tapisserie dial are the central inspection points.
- Date disc: genuine caliber 3120/5120 flips the date INSTANTLY at midnight (a snapping jump) — clones creep from 23:00 to 01:00
- Thickness: Royal Oak Jumbo 15202 is exactly 8.1 mm thick — clones measure 8.4–8.8 mm (movement sits too tall) — calipers reveal it immediately
- Tapisserie dial: under 10× magnification the pyramid edges must be sharp and geometrically precise — fakes show soft, pressed, or laser-etched surfaces
- Bezel screws: 8 hexagonal screws with mirror polishing and exact alignment — fakes: flatter, duller, asymmetric
Serial number format: AP serial numbers: 6–7-digit number engraved between the lugs at 9 o'clock. Reference number engraved separately on the opposite side. Very small — barely legible without a loupe.
