The Breitling Superocean Automatic 42, reference A173757A1B1A1, launched in 2019 and replaced the older Superocean II (A1736x). Breitling introduced four other sizes at the same time, 36, 44, 46 and 48 millimeters, but the 42mm quickly became the most-worn version in the lineup. Collectors know it under several names: Superocean Auto 42, New Superocean 42, or simply SOA42. The entry price was 3,450 US dollars on rubber, 3,950 dollars on the steel bracelet.
## Cleaner Dial, Ceramic Bezel, 13.32mm Case
Compared to its predecessor, the dial was pared back: no more minute track, no 24-hour ring. Available in black with baton indices (SOA42-A1-Black-Baton) or in white (SOA42-White-Baton). The bezel insert is now ceramic instead of aluminum, in solid black, which improves everyday scratch resistance. The crown guard was reworked as well. Power comes from the Caliber 17, COSC-certified, housed in a slim 13.32mm case.
## 2022: New Reference System, Old Model Lingers in the UK
With the MY22 update, Breitling introduced a new reference structure (A17375E71, A17375211), along with a redesigned case-back, more dial colors, and a new clasp. That didn't mean the A173757A1B1A1 vanished from the market entirely, in select markets like the UK it stayed available. Around the same time, Breitling released the Kelly Slater Limited Edition (A173751A1O1S1) with an orange dial and green strap, limited to 1,000 pieces, a clear sign that demand for the 42mm format hadn't slowed down.
