## 40mm, no chronograph: the break with Chronomat DNA
In October 2022, Breitling added a model to the Chronomat family that runs against its own tradition. The A32398 does away with chronograph pushers entirely and shrinks the case to 40mm — at just 11.77mm thick, noticeably slimmer than the 42mm and 44mm Chronomats. The bezel follows the same diet, sitting visibly flatter than on its chronograph siblings. Water-resistant to 200m, powered by the in-house Caliber B32. Five dial variants launched at market debut, including green, black, blue, white — and grey, the dial on the A32398101M1A1.
## Grey is the quiet one among five siblings
While green and blue take center stage in Breitling's marketing, the grey dial (code A32398-101-M1-Grey) remains the most understated member of the lineup of five. No special edition, no limited run — simply one of the five standard colorways from 2022. Collectors know the reference by names like "Chronomat GMT 40" or "Chrono GMT 40 Grey," both referring to the same base model with its UniSteel bezel and 60-unit scale.
## Two special editions branch off from the base model
In 2023, Breitling drew on the platform twice for special editions. The Giannis Antetokounmpo version (A32398A11L1A1) came with a green dial, yellow GMT hand, and a limited run of 1,750 pieces. The Sylt Edition (AB32398) went even more exclusive: just 288 pieces, sold only through jeweler Spliedt in Kampen, with a navy sunray dial and a lighthouse engraving on the case back, starting at $6,612. Both editions carry their own reference codes — the grey A32398101M1A1 remains technically untouched by either, with the same base Caliber B32 ticking away in all three versions.
Brand profile: Breitling
Breitling is known for aviation and dive watches. Chronographs (Navitimer, Chronomat) are the most frequently counterfeited. Pay close attention to slide rule details and COSC certification.
Key authenticity features
- Wing logo: a genuine Breitling logo shows the anchor and wing tips that NEVER touch — precise negative space between them — fakes let the tips meet or overlap
- 3D 'B' crown: the 'B' on the crown must appear three-dimensional with a light reflection on the curve — a flat 'B' = fake
- Bezel scale vs. dial: the outer white bezel scale must align precisely with the inner black dial indices — fakes show misalignment
- Date disc depth: a genuine Navitimer date disc sits flush with the dial plane — fakes show the date window as a 'crater' (noticeably sunken or raised)
Serial number format: Breitling serial numbers: alphanumeric, located between the lugs at 6 o'clock. Format: one letter + 8 digits (e.g. 'AB012012'). Older models: digits only.
