Search for the Cartier Reference 8191 and you'll turn up at least four names for it: Santos Ronde, Santos Vendôme Ronde, Ronde Vendôme Bicolor, and Santos Ronde Two-Tone. All four refer to the same caliber, the 81, housed in the round Vendôme case. For valuation purposes, that means collectors and sellers label the piece differently, but the reference number remains the reliable anchor.
## 1993: The Switch Away from Plexiglass
Early examples of the 8191 still carry plexiglass over the dial. Around 1993, Cartier switched to mineral glass, and sapphire crystal versions start to appear here and there. There's no catalogued date for the change; the timing is inferred from comparing pieces side by side. For buyers, plexiglass remains the most reliable marker of an early production year, especially on NOS examples.
## Four Dials, One Caliber
Four documented dial variants exist for the 8191: white with Roman numerals, a black counterpart, a full-gold version with black diamond indices, and a brushed grey execution. All four run the same caliber 81, so the value gap comes down to the dial and the gold finish, not the movement.
## The Screwed Bezel in Yellow Gold
The two-tone version, often listed in the trade as the Ronde Vendôme Bicolor, carries a screwed bezel in yellow gold. On Cartier models from this era, a screwed bezel isn't standard, and it's one of the first three things I check on the case during an authenticity review.
Brand profile: Cartier
Cartier watches (Santos, Tank, Ballon Bleu) are popular targets for counterfeiters. The distinctive design (Roman numerals, blue sword hands) is recognizable — but also easy to copy.
- Sapphire cabochon crown: on genuine pieces it's SET INTO THE METAL (bezel-set); on fakes it's usually GLUED. Test: loupe — adhesive residue around the edge = fake.
- Bracelet screws: genuine Cartier bracelets ALWAYS have visible screw slots. Pins instead = fake.
- 'Swiss Made' at 6 o'clock: MICROPRINTED directly beneath the 6 o'clock marker. Fakes often omit it or print it crooked.
- Guilloché pattern: under 10x magnification, EXACTLY parallel and uniformly deep. Irregularities = fake.
Serial number format: Cartier serial numbers: alphanumeric, on the case back. Older models: number located between the crystal ring and the case. New purchases come with a Cartier passport.
