The Panthère de Cartier is one of the rare watches that picks up exactly where it left off after a 13-year hiatus. Introduced in 1983 and discontinued in 2004, it returned to the collection in 2017 at the SIHH in Geneva, with the WJPN0016 as the mid-size yellow gold model. Cartier didn't treat the comeback as a straightforward archive reissue: the bracelet was revised compared to the first generation, and water resistance was raised to 3 bar / 30 metres. The date display that the original Panthère carried until 2004 did not make a return.
## What the Calibre 157 Reveals About the Watch
Powered by the Calibre 157, a quartz movement that Cartier runs across the entire Panthère line. The dial features a silver-toned finish with Roman numerals — anyone searching for luminous hands or a date window will search in vain. The bezel is fully set with brilliant-cut diamonds, and the bracelet is rendered in yellow gold. In the market, the model circulates under two names: "Panthère Medium YG Diamond" and "Panthère Gold Diamond Bezel" — both refer to the same reference.
## 2022: The WJPN0066 Takes Over
At Watches & Wonders 2022, Cartier unveiled the WJPN0066 as the successor. The dimensions shifted marginally — some sources list the length as 37 mm rather than 36 mm. New sunray dials were initially introduced on the steel and partially gilt variants. For the pre-owned market, this provides a clear frame of reference: the WJPN0016 is the direct predecessor generation with near-identical specifications, often available at a different price point than the current model.
