The Ref. WSSA0017 belongs to the new generation of Santos-de-Cartier chronographs that Cartier introduced at SIHH 2019. Collectors know the model under several names — Santos Chrono ADLC, Santos Chronograph XL ADLC, or simply Santos 100 XL Chrono. All three terms refer to the same reference, which tends to cause confusion on the resale market and leaves buyers second-guessing themselves.
## The break from the old Santos 100 XL
In 2019, Cartier fully retired the previous Santos 100 XL chronograph. The new case brought with it the QuickSwitch system, which lets you swap between the steel bracelet and a leather strap without tools. In practice, this is no minor detail — for many buyers it's a main selling point, since it means switching between a sporty look and a dressier one without a trip to the watchmaker. The ADLC bezel in black-coated steel has remained a defining feature of the WSSA0017 ever since this model year, not just a limited edition.
## Movement and dial in detail
The reference is powered by the Caliber 1904-CH MC, an in-house Cartier movement with chronograph function. The silvered opaline dial displays the classic Roman numerals of the Santos line, complemented by two sub-dials for the chronograph seconds and small seconds. This is exactly where a second look pays off during an authenticity check: the ADLC coating on the bezel and the print quality of the Roman numerals are usually the first weak points on counterfeits. Anyone buying a WSSA0017 should examine both under a loupe and in daylight before signing the bill of sale.
