## A New Reference Number After 27 Years of the Same Design
The Cartier Tank Française ran from 1996 until around 2022 almost unchanged, with squared-off brancards, a noticeably protruding crown, and printed dial numerals. In 2023, Cartier broke with that formula: the WSTA0074 is the first new reference number for the mid-size steel quartz model in the line. Set a 2000s Française next to a WSTA0074 and the shift in case and lug design is immediately obvious.
## What Actually Changes on the Case
The brancards are now rounded rather than angular, and the crown guard sits integrated into the case instead of mounted on top. There's also a satin finish and Roman numerals applied as metal appliqués rather than printed. The link connecting bracelet to case was redesigned as well. Cartier didn't roll out this update in isolation: alongside the WSTA0074, the WSTA0067 (Large Steel, automatic Caliber 1853) and the WSTA0068 (Small Steel, quartz) launched at the same time. Three sizes, one shared design reset.
## Dial and Bezel on the WSTA0074
On the medium version — also listed in the trade as the Tank Française MM or TF Medium 32mm — Cartier pairs a silver dial with Roman numerals and a polished steel bezel. No diamond-set options, no special variants within this reference: the WSTA0074 sticks to the classic silver combination that's served as the base version of the 32mm case since the 2023 redesign.
Brand profile: Cartier
Cartier watches (Santos, Tank, Ballon Bleu) are popular targets for counterfeiters. The distinctive design (Roman numerals, blue sword hands) is recognizable — but also easy to copy.
Key authenticity features
- Sapphire cabochon crown: on genuine pieces it's SET INTO THE METAL (bezel-set); on fakes it's usually GLUED. Test: loupe — adhesive residue around the edge = fake.
- Bracelet screws: genuine Cartier bracelets ALWAYS have visible screw slots. Pins instead = fake.
- 'Swiss Made' at 6 o'clock: MICROPRINTED directly beneath the 6 o'clock marker. Fakes often omit it or print it crooked.
- Guilloché pattern: under 10x magnification, EXACTLY parallel and uniformly deep. Irregularities = fake.
Serial number format: Cartier serial numbers: alphanumeric, on the case back. Older models: number located between the crystal ring and the case. New purchases come with a Cartier passport.

What should I look out for when buying a Cartier Tank Francaise 27mm Stainless Steel?
The key things to check when buying a Cartier Tank Francaise 27mm Stainless Steel are: 1) that the serial number and reference match the papers, 2) the condition of the case and bezel (scratches, signs of polishing), 3) completeness of box and warranty card (a 10–15 % price premium for a full set), 4) a documented service history, 5) an independent authenticity check — advisable from a purchase price of 5,000 EUR.
How do I tell whether a Cartier Tank Francaise 27mm Stainless Steel is genuine?
With a Cartier, counterfeits can usually be spotted from several details: the weight and material quality of the case, the precise execution of the bezel and dial, correctly engraved serial numbers at the prescribed depth, and the behaviour of the movement.
