IWC launched reference IW387903 in spring 2019, alongside IW387901 in steel with a green fabric strap and IW387902 in bronze with an olive dial. The real shift, though, is under the hood. With the in-house 69380, IWC parts ways with the Valjoux/ETA base that powered the previous reference, IW387802, which still ran on Cal. 79230. The column-wheel mechanism and Pellaton winding system are now built entirely in-house — no outsourced movement hiding behind the dial.
## 43mm to 41mm: The Spitfire Goes Everyday
Alongside the caliber switch, the case shrinks from 43mm to 41mm. Collectors have taken to calling the model the "Spitfire 41," or simply the "69000 Spitfire" after its movement family — the reference number IW387903 itself barely shows up in forum discussions. Two millimeters might not sound like much, but on the wrist it makes a real difference on a chronograph with three subdials.
## Black-Brown Instead of Green or Bronze
While its sibling models go for fabric straps and bronze cases, the IW387903 sticks with steel, a fixed stainless bezel ring, and a matte black three-hand chronograph dial in a black-brown finish. In my experience, it's the most understated of the three 2019 Spitfires — but it also has the broadest resale market. Steel and a black dial simply move better than bronze or green fabric, especially with buyers who plan to wear the watch daily rather than lock it in a safe.
Brand profile: IWC
IWC Schaffhausen produces high-quality pilot and sports watches. The Portugieser, Pilot's Watch (Big Pilot + Mark XVIII/XX), and Portofino are the most frequently faked references. Since 2025, APS Factory V3 has produced integrated 52010 super-clones with correct case thickness — classic tells (case thickness, movement visibility) are only partially reliable against these. Key checks today: engraving depth, seconds tick interval, thermally blued hand color, and sub-dial proportions.
- Serial number: genuine IWC serials are 6 digits, purely numeric, on the caseback — all serial numbers are verifiable in the IWC 'My IWC' portal. Fakes often have 7 digits or a mix of letters and numbers.
- Portugieser sub-dial seconds intervals: a GENUINE piece has exactly 3 mini-ticks between each seconds index (high beat rate of 28,800 vph) — fakes have 4 or irregular ticks (lower beat rate).
- Caseback engraving 'International Watch Company': genuine engraving is DEEP (perceptible with a fingernail) and sharp-edged — fakes are shallower, sometimes just laser-printed rather than truly engraved. Test: raking light and a loupe.
- Portugieser/Portofino blue hand color: thermally blued steel shifts from deep blue to light violet depending on viewing angle — painted fake hands show a flat, uniform blue.
