The Panerai Luminor Marina PAM00005 — known among collectors simply as "PAM 5" or "the Logo" — is one of the most thoroughly documented references from Neuchâtel's early serial production. What the caliber OP XI delivers inside a 44 mm case with a plain bezel is technically solid. What actually drives the market, however, is the dial.
## Four Detail Changes Across Eight Years of Production
From the early A-series through the J-series of 2007, the PAM00005 underwent four documented changes. Around 1999, roughly midway through the B-series, Panerai switched from Luminova to SuperLuminova — a transition that was never officially communicated. Early B-series examples with the old luminous compound and an orange-brown patina are among the more sought-after pieces today. Shortly after, around 2000, a new text variant appeared: "L SWISS L" became "L SWISS MADE L," driven by regulatory requirements and distributed gradually across the B- and C-series.
## Where the Arrow and Caseback Make the Difference
In 2004, the arrow styling in the OP logo on the dial changed — from Long Arrow to Short Arrow, undocumented according to the Panerai ABC Handbook but recognizable in practice. From the J-series of 2007 onward came the most significant caseback change: the OP logo engraved on the case back, entirely absent on earlier examples. Anyone submitting a PAM00005 for authentication today should know exactly these four points — they are what separates the early series with their collector's premium from the later standard production.
Brand profile: Panerai
Panerai Luminor and Radiomir watches are unmistakable thanks to their large case and signature crown-guard bridge. Fakes are usually given away by the crown-guard mechanism.
- Sandwich dial: genuine Panerai sandwich dials show a visible GREEN lume layer between the dial layers when viewed at an angle (on Arabic-numeral models) — fakes have single-layer dials with painted-on lume
- Crown-guard mechanism: Panerai's signature lever guard must close with a solid, firm click AND function correctly (turning the lever locks the crown for water resistance) — a purely decorative lever means fake
- Seconds-hand length: a genuine seconds hand reaches almost to the outer edge of the dial — fakes have shorter hands
- Engravings: genuine Panerai engravings are deep, laser-etched with sharp, clean edges — fakes show acid-stamped engravings with a sandy texture that fades over time
