Serial numbers
- ? – ? (2015–2025) — From approximately 2015, Patek Philippe deliberately assigns serial numbers non-chronologically to prevent inferences about the production year. Reliable year ranges are therefore not possible. The serial number is engraved on the case side (between the lugs) and additionally on the inner dust cover (Officer hinged back).
## Why the 5227G-010 Earned the Name Officer's Calatrava
Patek Philippe introduced reference 5227 in 2013, first as the 5227G-001 with an ivory dial in white gold, alongside yellow gold as the 5227J-001 and rose gold as the 5227R-001. The real trick is hidden in the case back: an officer's hinged cover with concealed hinges, a detail that earned the reference the nicknames Officer's Calatrava and Hunter-Case Calatrava among collectors. In every authenticity check I run, this is the first thing I look at — the hinges have to disappear completely into the case, or something's off.
## The Black Dial Arrived Two Years Later
The 5227G-010, the black-dial variant, followed in 2015. A dated market example from that year is documented on EveryWatch, even though some databases don't list it until 2017, likely a delayed market rollout or a dealer piece logged late. Among collectors, this model has come to be known as the Calatrava Date 39 Black, after its 39mm case and lacquered dial with date window.
## The Movement Changed in 2019
Four years after the black-dial variant appeared, Patek swapped the caliber: the 324 S C gave way to the 26-330 S C, adding a stop-seconds function and an improved winding system that reduces friction on the seconds wheel. The transition dragged on into 2021, so early pieces carrying the new caliber code can still date back to 2019.
## Discontinued in Early 2026
Patek pulled the 5227G-010 from the current catalog in early 2026, along with the rose gold 5227R-001. At Watches & Wonders 2026, the brand introduced its successor, the 5227G-015, distinguished by a salmon opaline dial instead of black. For collectors, that makes the 010 a discontinued model, with the usual effects on availability and secondary-market pricing that a catalog exit like this tends to bring.
Brand profile: Patek Philippe
Patek Philippe produces the world's most exclusive watches. Counterfeits are typically identifiable by their build quality — the genuine article sets standards that are nearly impossible to replicate.
Key authenticity features
- Dial embossing Nautilus: the genuine piece has 11 RAISED horizontal stripes with precise edges. 3D depth is visible under raking light. Flat stripes = fake.
- Case thickness Nautilus 5711: EXACTLY 8.3mm measured with calipers. Deviation of +0.5mm = fake with 7750 base or Miyota.
- Weight Nautilus 5711/1A: 131.4g ± 1g (with bracelet). >5g deviation = suspect.
- PP Seal on rotor (display back): the genuine Patek Philippe Seal features DEEP 3D engraving with sharp edges. Fake rotors have a shallow stamp.
Serial number format: Patek serial numbers: 6–7-digit number on the caseback. Complete archive held by Patek Philippe — an extract can be ordered.
Buying guide: Patek Philippe Calatrava
Market situation and price range
At $15,484 the Calatrava sits in a segment where first owners sell regularly — clean pieces with box and papers are not uncommon. The jump from "good" to "very good" usually costs 1,000 to 2,000 euros more at purchase. You get that premium back on resale if the condition is preserved.
Watch out for swings: This reference has an above-average volatility of 892.9 percent. In concrete terms: the price can move by several hundred euros within a few weeks. Check the current value before buying or selling — old listings or auction results from two months ago are of little help.
What to look out for when buying?
- Authenticity: The serial number and reference on the case must match the papers. A professional authenticity check of the Patek Philippe Calatrava reliably rules out counterfeits.
- Condition: Check scratches on the case and bezel — professional refurbishment can leave traces.
- Service history: A documented service by the manufacturer or a certified watchmaker increases the value.
- Scope of delivery: Box, papers and warranty card make a noticeable price difference on the Calatrava.
- Independent certification: The CPS-52 standard covers 52 checkpoints — from the serial number and the timing machine to water resistance. The result is secured on the blockchain and can be verified at any time.

What should I look out for when buying a Patek Philippe Calatrava?
The key things to check when buying a Patek Philippe Calatrava are: 1) that the serial number and reference match the papers, 2) the condition of the case and bezel (scratches, signs of polishing), 3) completeness of box and warranty card (a 10–15 % price premium for a full set), 4) a documented service history, 5) an independent authenticity check — advisable from a purchase price of 5,000 EUR.
How do I tell whether a Patek Philippe Calatrava is genuine?
With a Patek Philippe, counterfeits can usually be spotted from several details: the weight and material quality of the case, the precise execution of the bezel and dial, correctly engraved serial numbers at the prescribed depth, and the behaviour of the movement. A forensic authenticity check to the CPS-52 standard examines 52 individual points and is the most reliable method — especially for purchases over 10,000 EUR.
