Serial numbers
- P000001 – Kxxxxxx (2000–2001) — P = c. 2000, K = c. 2000–2001 (overlap). Letter-prefix system. Serial number between the lugs at 6 o'clock (before 2005 only there; from 2005 also on rehaut).
- Yxxxxxx – Fxxxxxx (2002–2004) — Y = c. 2002, F = c. 2003–2004. Letter-prefix system.
- Dxxxxxx – Mxxxxxx (2005–2008) — D = c. 2005–2006, Z = c. 2006–2007, M = c. 2007–2008. From 2005 serial number also on rehaut.
- Vxxxxxx – Gxxxxxx (2009–2010) — V = c. 2009, G = c. 2010. Last usable letter-prefix year.
- RANDOM – RANDOM (2010–2023) — From c. 2010, fully randomized 8-digit alphanumeric serial numbers (e.g. 'OT23Q257'). Production year only determinable via warranty card. From 2020: new warranty card with NFC chip.
## 20 Percent Fewer Parts, an All-New Movement
2000 marks the end of the line for the fifth-generation Daytona built on the Zenith El Primero base, Caliber 4030, in the Ref. 16519. The Ref. 116519 arrives with Rolex's in-house chronograph Caliber 4130, which uses 20 percent fewer components than its predecessor. The same year brings the first white gold Daytona on a leather strap, alongside the first Beach editions with gemstone dials.
## Rehaut, Parachrom, and the End of Date-by-Serial
Starting in 2005, the inner dial ring at 6 o'clock is engraved with the serial number as well, and by 2008 this is the only system in use. That same year, 2005, also sees the paramagnetic Parachrom blue hairspring make its way into Caliber 4130, a clear tell for examples made after 2005. 2010 brings the next break: Rolex switches to randomized eight-digit serial numbers, and from then on the number no longer reveals the production year. Dating a piece now comes down to the warranty card alone.
## The 2017 Cut: Cerachrom Replaces the Engraved Bezel
At Baselworld 2017, a black Cerachrom bezel replaces the engraved white gold bezel, and the leather strap gives way to the black Oysterflex. The new suffix LN, for Lunette Noire, marks the 116519LN. Dials are now offered in Ghost, Meteorite, MOP, and Black Diamond, while the old non-LN 116519 exits the lineup at the same time.
## From the Beach Series to the Successor
Among collectors, the Beach dials in Chrysoprase, turquoise, and mother-of-pearl are especially sought after, along with the sodalite version with diamond hour markers. 2023 sees the last 116519LN roll off the line, after which the 126519LN takes over with Caliber 4131 and the Chronergy escapement.
Brand profile: Rolex
Rolex is the most counterfeited watch brand in the world. Super-clones (VSF, ARF, Clean — the latter inactive since a 07/2025 raid, only old stock remains) reach 95%+ similarity. Authenticity is almost always only identifiable through micro-details and caliber behavior.
Key authenticity features
- Case back: ALWAYS solid and closed — any viewing window means definitely fake (exception: vintage Ref. 6085 only)
- Minute hand length: genuine Rolex minute hands end EXACTLY at the minute chapter ring. 1 mm too long = fake. The strongest VSF tell.
- Seconds hand: smooth sweep without any hesitation — the slightest tick-tock means fake
- Cyclops lens (on Date models): must magnify exactly 2.5×, the date should nearly fill the entire window
Serial number format: Since 2010, a random alphanumeric combination (e.g. 'G3M9K721'). 2000-2010: a letter plus 6-7 digits. Serial number engraved on the rehaut at 6 o'clock (from ~2005 on). Older models: between the lug holes at 6 o'clock on the case.
Buying guide: Rolex Daytona
Market situation and price range
At $33,607 the Daytona sits in a segment where first owners sell regularly — clean pieces with box and papers are not uncommon. The jump from "good" to "very good" usually costs 1,000 to 2,000 euros more at purchase. You get that premium back on resale if the condition is preserved.
Where the price stands
The price has fallen by -11.7% over the past four months. No crash, but a clear downward trend. Buyers currently have room to negotiate; sellers are better off waiting for the market to bottom out — unless they have to sell.
Watch out for swings: This reference has an above-average volatility of 49.1 percent. In concrete terms: the price can move by several hundred euros within a few weeks. Check the current value before buying or selling — old listings or auction results from two months ago are of little help.
What to look out for when buying?
- Authenticity: The serial number and reference on the case must match the papers. A professional authenticity check of the Rolex Daytona reliably rules out counterfeits.
- Condition: Check scratches on the case and bezel — professional refurbishment can leave traces.
- Service history: A documented service by the manufacturer or a certified watchmaker increases the value.
- Scope of delivery: Box, papers and warranty card make a noticeable price difference on the Daytona.
- Independent certification: The CPS-52 standard covers 52 checkpoints — from the serial number and the timing machine to water resistance. The result is secured on the blockchain and can be verified at any time.

What should I look out for when buying a Rolex Daytona?
The key things to check when buying a Rolex Daytona are: 1) that the serial number and reference match the papers, 2) the condition of the case and bezel (scratches, signs of polishing), 3) completeness of box and warranty card (a 10–15 % price premium for a full set), 4) a documented service history, 5) an independent authenticity check — advisable from a purchase price of 5,000 EUR.
How do I tell whether a Rolex Daytona is genuine?
With a Rolex, counterfeits can usually be spotted from several details: the weight and material quality of the case, the precise execution of the bezel and dial, correctly engraved serial numbers at the prescribed depth, and the behaviour of the movement. A forensic authenticity check to the CPS-52 standard examines 52 individual points and is the most reliable method — especially for purchases over 10,000 EUR.
Where can I sell a Rolex Daytona Ref. 116519?
There are several channels for selling a Rolex Daytona: 1) specialist online dealers (Chrono24, Watchfinder, Wempe, Chronext) — fast, but with a 10–20 % margin deduction, 2) auction houses (Phillips, Christie's, Sotheby's) — higher proceeds possible, takes 3–6 months, 3) private sale (classifieds, WatchUSeek) — highest proceeds, but more effort and fraud risk. In our experience a ChronoCheck valuation report raises the achieved sale price by 5–10 %.
