Serial numbers
- ? – ? (2023–?) — Rolex has used randomized serial numbers without sequential year coding since 2010. For the 126505 (from April 2023 onward), no serial-to-year assignment is possible; the production year can only be determined via warranty card or proof of purchase.
## 18k Everose, Four Dials, One New Caliber
The Rolex Daytona 126505 has been replacing the 116505 since 2023 — a reference that served as Rolex's gold chronograph for 18 years. Beneath the new sapphire crystal caseback beats Calibre 4131, an evolution of the 4130 that has been regarded as one of the most reliable chronograph movements since the year 2000. Rolex retains the tachymeter ring in solid 18k Everose Gold. Other Daytona references in the 2023 generation switched to Cerachrom; the 126505 stays with an all-gold bezel — that is its defining distinction within the lineup.
## Sundust, Chocolate, and Two Diamond Variants
At launch, Rolex introduced three dial references: 126505-0001 with a black dial and Sundust subdials, 126505-0002 adding diamond indices to the same layout, and 126505-0003 with Sundust as the main dial. The term "Sundust Daytona" caught on quickly among collectors, the warm golden hue of the dial complementing the Everose character of the case perfectly. In 2025, Rolex added the 126505-0005 with a sunray-brushed chocolate dial and black subdials — immediately dubbed the "Chocolate Daytona."
## Why the 126505 Holds Steady on the Secondary Market
Water resistance to 100 metres, a 40 mm case, and lugs that are marginally narrower than on the predecessor. The diamond variant 126505-0002 consistently commands the most significant premium over retail in the secondary market. Comparing all four dial codes reveals a clear logic: Rolex built the 126505 as a coherent family, not a collection of standalone pieces. Calibre 4131 benefits from more than two decades of real-world experience with the 4130 — a foundation on which Rolex rarely stumbles.
Brand profile: Rolex
Rolex is the most counterfeited watch brand in the world. Super-clones (VSF, ARF, Clean — the latter inactive after a raid in 07/2025, only old stock remaining) achieve 95%+ similarity. Authenticity is almost always detectable only via micro-details + movement behavior.
Key authenticity features
- Case back: ALWAYS solid and closed — any display window = definitely fake (exception: Vintage Ref. 6085 only)
- Minute hand length: genuine Rolex minute hands end EXACTLY at the minute chapter ring. 1 mm too long = fake. Strongest VSF tell.
- Seconds hand: smooth sweep without any hesitation — the slightest tick = fake
- Cyclops lens (on date models): must magnify exactly 2.5×, date fills almost the entire window
Serial number format: Since 2010: random alphanumeric combination (e.g. 'G3M9K721'). 2000–2010: letter + 6–7 digits. Serial number engraved on the rehaut at 6 o'clock (from ~2005). Older models: between the lugs at 6 o'clock on the case.
Buying guide: Rolex Daytona
What drives the price here
At $65,713 the watch sells well if the condition is right. A market rule of thumb: a complete set with box, papers and warranty card brings 10 to 15 percent more than the bare watch. Buying without papers can pay off, but you take the same discount again later when you resell.
Watch out for swings: This reference has an above-average volatility of 30.8 percent. In concrete terms: the price can move by several hundred euros within a few weeks. Check the current value before buying or selling — old listings or auction results from two months ago are of little help.
What to look out for when buying?
- Authenticity: The serial number and reference on the case must match the papers. A professional authenticity check of the Rolex Daytona reliably rules out counterfeits.
- Condition: Check scratches on the case and bezel — professional refurbishment can leave traces.
- Service history: A documented service by the manufacturer or a certified watchmaker increases the value.
- Scope of delivery: Box, papers and warranty card make a noticeable price difference on the Daytona.
- Independent certification: The CPS-52 standard covers 52 checkpoints — from the serial number and the timing machine to water resistance. The result is secured on the blockchain and can be verified at any time.

What should I look out for when buying a Rolex Daytona?
The key things to check when buying a Rolex Daytona are: 1) that the serial number and reference match the papers, 2) the condition of the case and bezel (scratches, signs of polishing), 3) completeness of box and warranty card (a 10–15 % price premium for a full set), 4) a documented service history, 5) an independent authenticity check — advisable from a purchase price of 5,000 EUR.
How do I tell whether a Rolex Daytona is genuine?
With a Rolex, counterfeits can usually be spotted from several details: the weight and material quality of the case, the precise execution of the bezel and dial, correctly engraved serial numbers at the prescribed depth, and the behaviour of the movement. A forensic authenticity check to the CPS-52 standard examines 52 individual points and is the most reliable method — especially for purchases over 10,000 EUR.
Where can I sell a Rolex Daytona Ref. 126505?
There are several channels for selling a Rolex Daytona: 1) specialist online dealers (Chrono24, Watchfinder, Wempe, Chronext) — fast, but with a 10–20 % margin deduction, 2) auction houses (Phillips, Christie's, Sotheby's) — higher proceeds possible, takes 3–6 months, 3) private sale (classifieds, WatchUSeek) — highest proceeds, but more effort and fraud risk. In our experience a ChronoCheck valuation report raises the achieved sale price by 5–10 %.
