## 60 Years of Daytona, One New Caliber: The 126506 Arrives in 2023

With Ref. 126506, Rolex reinvented the platinum Daytona in 2023, right in time for the collection's 60th birthday. It succeeds the 116506, which held its place in the lineup for ten years, from 2013 to 2023. Among collectors, the piece goes by names like Platona, Ice Blue Daytona, or 60th Anniversary Daytona, and sometimes simply Sapphire Back Daytona — thanks to an innovation I'll get to in a moment.

## Caliber 4131 Replaces 4130: More Than Just a New Number

Inside now beats the caliber 4131 instead of the 4130, with a Chronergy escapement, Paraflex shock absorbers, and a skeletonized rotor in yellow gold. But the real highlight sits in the case: for the first time in Daytona history, a reference gets a sapphire case back, exclusive to the 126506. If you want to see the movement, no other platinum Daytona lets you look this deep.

## Case and Bezel: Small Details, Clear Signature

The case proportions look subtly reworked, with more pronounced lug flanks. The Cerachrom bezel gets a new profile — wider, flatter, with the ceramic no longer running all the way to the edge. The sub-dial rings are thinner and higher-contrast than on the predecessor.

## Two Dials, One Color Shift on the Baguette Version

Two Ice Blue dial variants are currently in circulation: the standard index execution (0001) and the baguette-diamond version (0002). On the latter, Rolex switched the counter rings to chestnut brown instead of keeping them tone-on-tone as on the 116506 — a detail that's immediately obvious side by side.

Brand profile: Rolex

Rolex is the most counterfeited watch brand in the world. Super-clones (VSF, ARF, Clean — the latter inactive since the 07/2025 raid, with only old stock still circulating) reach 95%+ similarity. Authenticity can almost always only be identified through micro-details and caliber behavior.

Key authenticity features
  • Case back: ALWAYS solid and closed — any display window means it's definitely fake (exception: vintage Ref. 6085 only)
  • Minute hand length: genuine Rolex minute hands end EXACTLY at the minute chapter ring. 1 mm too long = fake. The strongest VSF tell.
  • Seconds hand: smooth sweep without any hesitation — the slightest tick-tock motion means it's fake
  • Cyclops lens (on Date models): must magnify exactly 2.5×, with the date filling almost the entire window

Serial number format: Since 2010, a random alphanumeric combination (e.g. 'G3M9K721'). 2000-2010: a letter plus 6-7 digits. Serial number engraved on the rehaut at 6 o'clock (from ~2005). Older models: between the lug shoulders at 6 o'clock on the case.

Buying guide: Rolex Cosmograph Daytona

What matters at this price point

At $128,304 we are no longer talking about an everyday watch but a collector's piece. Every detail drives the price: an original dial can be worth five figures more than a service dial, missing papers noticeably depress the value, and an over-polished bezel is effectively lost money. Anyone buying in this range should take their time and, when in doubt, take a second look.

Watch out for swings: This reference has an above-average volatility of 28.5 percent. In concrete terms: the price can move by several hundred euros within a few weeks. Check the current value before buying or selling — old listings or auction results from two months ago are of little help.

What to look out for when buying?

  • Authenticity: The serial number and reference on the case must match the papers. A professional authenticity check of the Rolex Cosmograph Daytona reliably rules out counterfeits.
  • Condition: Check scratches on the case and bezel — professional refurbishment can leave traces.
  • Service history: A documented service by the manufacturer or a certified watchmaker increases the value.
  • Scope of delivery: Box, papers and warranty card make a noticeable price difference on the Cosmograph Daytona.
  • Independent certification: The CPS-52 standard covers 52 checkpoints — from the serial number and the timing machine to water resistance. The result is secured on the blockchain and can be verified at any time.

What should I look out for when buying a Rolex Cosmograph Daytona?
The key things to check when buying a Rolex Cosmograph Daytona are: 1) that the serial number and reference match the papers, 2) the condition of the case and bezel (scratches, signs of polishing), 3) completeness of box and warranty card (a 10–15 % price premium for a full set), 4) a documented service history, 5) an independent authenticity check — advisable from a purchase price of 5,000 EUR.
How do I tell whether a Rolex Cosmograph Daytona is genuine?
With a Rolex, counterfeits can usually be spotted from several details: the weight and material quality of the case, the precise execution of the bezel and dial, correctly engraved serial numbers at the prescribed depth, and the behaviour of the movement. A forensic authenticity check to the CPS-52 standard examines 52 individual points and is the most reliable method — especially for purchases over 10,000 EUR.
Where can I sell a Rolex Cosmograph Daytona Ref. 126506?
There are several channels for selling a Rolex Cosmograph Daytona: 1) specialist online dealers (Chrono24, Watchfinder, Wempe, Chronext) — fast, but with a 10–20 % margin deduction, 2) auction houses (Phillips, Christie's, Sotheby's) — higher proceeds possible, takes 3–6 months, 3) private sale (classifieds, WatchUSeek) — highest proceeds, but more effort and fraud risk. In our experience a ChronoCheck valuation report raises the achieved sale price by 5–10 %.
