In 1977, Reference 16018 replaced the 1601/8, and with it came Caliber 3035. In place of the old 1575, the watch now ran on a movement beating at 28,800 vibrations per hour, with Quickset now enabled through the double crown. The dial lost its curvature, as the pie-pan edge gave way to a flat surface. Buy a 16018 in gold, and you're also buying a piece of transitional technology bridging the old 1970s calibers and modern Rolex accuracy.
## Sapphire Crystal as an Early Tell
Just a year later, in 1978, Rolex swapped acrylic for sapphire crystal with a Cyclops lens. That makes the 16018 one of the very first Datejust references to make this switch, alongside the OysterQuartz. Examples from the brief acrylic phase between 1977 and early 1978 are correspondingly rare and are regarded by collectors as an early production run. A glance at the crystal, then, tells you more about the birth year than any paperwork ever could.
## The Dials That Drive the Price
With the 16018, the dial is what determines collector class. Tiffany signatures, Sigma linen texture, lapis lazuli, onyx, mother-of-pearl, tiger's eye, and the rare Oman Crest dial bearing the national emblem span a range that leaves the plain gold Datejust far behind. The fluted 18-karat bezel, meanwhile, stays constant across every variant. The story of the 160xx series comes to a close in 1988, when Reference 16238 takes over with Caliber 3135 and its 31 jewels, sending the 16018 into the vintage market.
Brand profile: Rolex
Rolex is the most counterfeited watch brand in the world. Super-clones (VSF, ARF, Clean — the latter inactive since the 07/2025 raid, with only old stock still circulating) reach 95%+ similarity. Authenticity can almost always only be identified through micro-details and caliber behavior.
- Case back: ALWAYS solid and closed — any display window means it's definitely fake (exception: vintage Ref. 6085 only)
- Minute hand length: genuine Rolex minute hands end EXACTLY at the minute chapter ring. 1 mm too long = fake. The strongest VSF tell.
- Seconds hand: smooth sweep without any hesitation — the slightest tick-tock motion means it's fake
- Cyclops lens (on Date models): must magnify exactly 2.5×, with the date filling almost the entire window
Serial number format: Since 2010, a random alphanumeric combination (e.g. 'G3M9K721'). 2000-2010: a letter plus 6-7 digits. Serial number engraved on the rehaut at 6 o'clock (from ~2005). Older models: between the lug shoulders at 6 o'clock on the case.
