- random (alphanumerisch) – random (alphanumerisch) (2010–2020) — From ca. 2009/2010, randomized alphanumeric serial number system. No reliable year determination from the serial number alone — the warranty card is the only reliable source.
## 15 Years of 31mm: What Makes the Ref. 177200 Still Matter
Rolex introduced the 177200 in 2005 as the successor to the ref. 77080: a 31mm case in 904L Oystersteel, no date, domed steel bezel, Cal. 2230. In the trade it goes by OP 31 or Midsize OP — the official catalog name is Oyster Perpetual 31. The launch lineup covered four dials, including Silver Sunburst and White. Early pieces carry the serial engraving at the lug shoulders at 6 o'clock; around 2008 Rolex moved that engraving to the rehaut inner ring.
## The Internal Overhaul You Can't See from the Outside
From 2014 onward, the case houses Cal. 2231. The blue Parachrom hairspring makes the movement antimagnetic, and the Paraflex shock absorber improves impact resistance by 15% over the original Cal. 2230. At the same time, Rolex expanded the dial range with bold lacquer colors in Roman numerals: Azzurro Blue and Red Grape arrived in 2014, with Candy Pink following later. From 2010 onward the serial number system went random — dating a piece by serial number alone has been impossible ever since, and only the warranty card provides a reliable year.
## Out of the Catalog, Not Out of the Market
The 177200 was discontinued in 2020 with the arrival of the 277200 (Cal. 2232, 55-hour power reserve, Syloxi silicon hairspring). Since then a price gap has opened up between the two references — one that works squarely in favor of pre-owned buyers. Seven dial options in a 31mm steel case, technically sound: the 177200 is not old stock being cleared out, but a deliberate alternative to its successor. Cal. 2231 examples from 2014 onward are the stronger technical choice — especially for buyers who don't want to give up the Parachrom hairspring and Paraflex shock protection.
Brand profile: Rolex
Rolex is the most counterfeited watch brand in the world. Super-clones (VSF, ARF, Clean — the latter inactive after a raid in 07/2025, only old stock remaining) achieve 95%+ similarity. Authenticity is almost always detectable only via micro-details + movement behavior.
Key authenticity features
- Case back: ALWAYS solid and closed — any display window = definitely fake (exception: Vintage Ref. 6085 only)
- Minute hand length: genuine Rolex minute hands end EXACTLY at the minute chapter ring. 1 mm too long = fake. Strongest VSF tell.
- Seconds hand: smooth sweep without any hesitation — the slightest tick = fake
- Cyclops lens (on date models): must magnify exactly 2.5×, date fills almost the entire window
Serial number format: Since 2010: random alphanumeric combination (e.g. 'G3M9K721'). 2000–2010: letter + 6–7 digits. Serial number engraved on the rehaut at 6 o'clock (from ~2005). Older models: between the lugs at 6 o'clock on the case.
Buying guide: Rolex Lady Oyster Perpetual
Entry into Rolex
At $6,172 this reference is one of the more affordable ways to wear a Rolex on your wrist. That is precisely why many pieces have already passed through several hands — condition varies accordingly. Buyers here should pay particular attention to service history and honest photos from the seller.
Watch out for swings: This reference has an above-average volatility of 35.6 percent. In concrete terms: the price can move by several hundred euros within a few weeks. Check the current value before buying or selling — old listings or auction results from two months ago are of little help.

What should I look out for when buying a Rolex Lady Oyster Perpetual?
The key things to check when buying a Rolex Lady Oyster Perpetual are: 1) that the serial number and reference match the papers, 2) the condition of the case and bezel (scratches, signs of polishing), 3) completeness of box and warranty card (a 10–15 % price premium for a full set), 4) a documented service history, 5) an independent authenticity check — advisable from a purchase price of 5,000 EUR.

With a Rolex, counterfeits can usually be spotted from several details: the weight and material quality of the case, the precise execution of the bezel and dial, correctly engraved serial numbers at the prescribed depth, and the behaviour of the movement.
