In 2005, Rolex introduces reference 178271, successor to the all-steel 178240 and the first Midsize Datejust to carry the house's own Everose alloy. Rolesor is the name for the steel-and-rose-gold combination, the case measures 31 millimeters, and the fluted bezel is solid Everose. Underneath the dial runs caliber 2235, in service since 1999 and carried over unchanged into the 178271. Collectors also know the model as the DJ31 Two-Tone Everose or simply the Lady-Datejust 31 — the nickname shifts from dealer to dealer, but the reference number stays the reliable anchor.
## 16 Dials, One Turning Point in 2020
The 178271's range of variants is remarkable: 16 documented dial executions are known, from silver and mother-of-pearl to three highly sought-after special motifs. On the Floral Dial, a relief of blossoms is pressed into the surface; on the Sundust Dial, a shimmering sunburst finish takes over that role. The Gold Dust Dial, in turn, pairs fine mica flecking with diamond hour markers — a rare combination in the Rolesor lineup. In 2011, Rolex switches company-wide to randomized eight-digit serial numbers, and 2015 brings Superlative Chronometer certification, holding the watch to a rate of just -2 to +2 seconds a day. Production of the 178271 winds down around 2020: its successor, the 278271, brings caliber 2236 with a silicon Syloxi hairspring and 55 hours of power reserve, up from its predecessor's classic 48.
Brand profile: Rolex
Rolex is the most counterfeited watch brand in the world. Super-clones (VSF, ARF, Clean — the latter inactive since the 07/2025 raid, with only old stock still circulating) reach 95%+ similarity. Authenticity can almost always only be identified through micro-details and caliber behavior.
- Case back: ALWAYS solid and closed — any display window means it's definitely fake (exception: vintage Ref. 6085 only)
- Minute hand length: genuine Rolex minute hands end EXACTLY at the minute chapter ring. 1 mm too long = fake. The strongest VSF tell.
- Seconds hand: smooth sweep without any hesitation — the slightest tick-tock motion means it's fake
- Cyclops lens (on Date models): must magnify exactly 2.5×, with the date filling almost the entire window
Serial number format: Since 2010, a random alphanumeric combination (e.g. 'G3M9K721'). 2000-2010: a letter plus 6-7 digits. Serial number engraved on the rehaut at 6 o'clock (from ~2005). Older models: between the lug shoulders at 6 o'clock on the case.
