The Rolex Day-Date Ref. 1807 rolled off the line starting in 1956, but the pieces collectors now call the "President Bark" don't show up until the mid-1960s — with the textured Bark bezel that gives the reference its nickname. In 1965, Rolex made an internal caliber switch: from the 1555 with 25 jewels to the 1556 with 26 jewels, both running at 19,800 vibrations per hour. One extra jewel, smoother running, barely visible from the outside — but for any watchmaker, a clear dividing line between early and late production.
## 1969 Brought the Clasp Still Being Copied Today
Four years after the caliber switch came the next quiet change: in 1969, the President bracelet gained the Crownclasp, a concealed clasp that replaced the more open earlier construction. If you're holding a 1807 and find the old fold-over mechanism, chances are good you've got a pre-1969 piece in your hands. The reference's dial lineup runs from the Pie-Pan Champagne with stick indices to Silver with baton markers to the Pie-Pan Black — plus special variants like the Diamond-Set dial and the Khanjar dial made for the Omani market, a detail that raises provenance questions in every appraisal.
## 1977 Marked the End of the Four-Digit Reference Era
In 1977, Rolex drew a line under it: the four-digit 18XX series gave way to the five-digit 180XX lineup, with the 18078 inheriting the Bark bezel, gaining Caliber 3055 and a sapphire crystal in place of Plexiglas. This successor stayed in the catalog into the early eighties. For appraising an 1807, then, the year alone matters less than the combination of caliber, clasp type, and dial variant — three traits that must line up consistently whenever a President Bark's authenticity is being verified.
Brand profile: Rolex
Rolex is the most counterfeited watch brand in the world. Super-clones (VSF, ARF, Clean — the latter inactive since the 07/2025 raid, with only old stock still circulating) reach 95%+ similarity. Authenticity can almost always only be identified through micro-details and caliber behavior.
- Case back: ALWAYS solid and closed — any display window means it's definitely fake (exception: vintage Ref. 6085 only)
- Minute hand length: genuine Rolex minute hands end EXACTLY at the minute chapter ring. 1 mm too long = fake. The strongest VSF tell.
- Seconds hand: smooth sweep without any hesitation — the slightest tick-tock motion means it's fake
- Cyclops lens (on Date models): must magnify exactly 2.5×, with the date filling almost the entire window
Serial number format: Since 2010, a random alphanumeric combination (e.g. 'G3M9K721'). 2000-2010: a letter plus 6-7 digits. Serial number engraved on the rehaut at 6 o'clock (from ~2005). Older models: between the lug shoulders at 6 o'clock on the case.
