The Ref. 52506 is no ordinary product launch. With it, Rolex revived a technique at Watches & Wonders 2024 that had simply ceased to exist in contemporary production since the 1950s Day-Date models: guilloché on the dial, machine-engraved in a rice-grain pattern, in the ice blue of 950 platinum. Anyone who turns it in daylight for the first time understands immediately why it lay dormant for roughly 70 years — not because it had been forgotten, but because the craftsmanship involved cannot simply be replicated at will.
## Why Platinum Only — and What That Means for the Market
No gold, no alternative: the 52506 is available exclusively in a 950 platinum case, dial and fluted domed bezel included. From launch, Rolex offered two variants — M52506-0002 with a brown and M52506-0003 with a black crocodile leather strap, both available from day one. The Calibre 7140 powers it from beneath, proprietary and not fully documented in the public record. For platinum collectors, the Ref. 52506 is therefore the only current 1908 option in existence.
## The Guilloché Question Keeping Dealers and Collectors Busy
What has been occupying the secondary market since spring 2024: is the 52506 a bargain relative to its craft complexity, or a platinum trap? The ice-blue guilloché dial in rice-grain relief ranks among the most intricate surfaces Rolex has produced in series for decades — anyone who has followed engine-turned work over the last 20 years knows that depth like this rarely gets cheap again on the secondary market.
Brand profile: Rolex
Rolex is the most counterfeited watch brand in the world. Super-clones (VSF, ARF, Clean — the latter inactive since a 07/2025 raid, only old stock remains) reach 95%+ similarity. Authenticity is almost always only identifiable through micro-details and caliber behavior.
- Case back: ALWAYS solid and closed — any viewing window means definitely fake (exception: vintage Ref. 6085 only)
- Minute hand length: genuine Rolex minute hands end EXACTLY at the minute chapter ring. 1 mm too long = fake. The strongest VSF tell.
- Seconds hand: smooth sweep without any hesitation — the slightest tick-tock means fake
- Cyclops lens (on Date models): must magnify exactly 2.5×, the date should nearly fill the entire window
Serial number format: Since 2010, a random alphanumeric combination (e.g. 'G3M9K721'). 2000-2010: a letter plus 6-7 digits. Serial number engraved on the rehaut at 6 o'clock (from ~2005 on). Older models: between the lug holes at 6 o'clock on the case.
