## 30 Years on the Wrist — and Not a Self-Winding Rotor in Sight

The Rolex Ref. 6694 is the last Oyster you wind by hand. Introduced in 1958 as the successor to the Ref. 6494, it launched with Caliber 1215 — Breguet hairspring, 21,600 half-oscillations per hour, 34mm steel case. From serial number 1,538,000 (approx. 1967), Caliber 1225 with an integrated date module took over. By the time production ended in 1988, Rolex had built the 6694 for nearly 30 consecutive years — longer than some Submariner generations ever ran.

## Why Early Examples Command a Premium of Their Own

Up to approximately serial number 830,000 (1962), the lume plots still contain radium — identifiable by the absence of the "T Swiss T" stamp on the dial; everything after that uses tritium. Anyone hunting an early piece with a gilt dial and Dauphine hands pays, on average, 20–35 percent more today than for a matte Phase 3 variant. The transitional watches from 1967 — Caliber 1225 movement but still Dauphine rather than baton hands — are for precisely that reason some of the hardest pieces in the lineup to price.

## The Color Story Begins in 1970

Starting in 1970, Rolex brought orange, green, blue, and pink to the 6694: sunburst dials that echo the Stella era of the Datejust, mounted on a hand-wound 34mm case. These exotic-color variants are what fuel the collector market today. Solid Oyster bracelets (Ref. 78350, endlink 557B) replaced the folded 7205 versions with endlink 57 from around 1975 onward. The bracelet is consistently underestimated in valuations: an original 78350 can move the all-in price by 8–15 percent on its own.

Brand profile: Rolex

Rolex is the most counterfeited watch brand in the world. Super-clones (VSF, ARF, Clean — the latter inactive since a 07/2025 raid, only old stock remains) reach 95%+ similarity. Authenticity is almost always only identifiable through micro-details and caliber behavior.

Key authenticity features
  • Case back: ALWAYS solid and closed — any viewing window means definitely fake (exception: vintage Ref. 6085 only)
  • Minute hand length: genuine Rolex minute hands end EXACTLY at the minute chapter ring. 1 mm too long = fake. The strongest VSF tell.
  • Seconds hand: smooth sweep without any hesitation — the slightest tick-tock means fake
  • Cyclops lens (on Date models): must magnify exactly 2.5×, the date should nearly fill the entire window

Serial number format: Since 2010, a random alphanumeric combination (e.g. 'G3M9K721'). 2000-2010: a letter plus 6-7 digits. Serial number engraved on the rehaut at 6 o'clock (from ~2005 on). Older models: between the lug holes at 6 o'clock on the case.

Buying guide: Rolex Oysterdate Precision

Entry into Rolex

At $4,126 this reference is one of the more affordable ways to wear a Rolex on your wrist. That is precisely why many pieces have already passed through several hands — condition varies accordingly. Buyers here should pay particular attention to service history and honest photos from the seller.

Where the price stands

The price has fallen by -23.9% over the past four months. No crash, but a clear downward trend. Buyers currently have room to negotiate; sellers are better off waiting for the market to bottom out — unless they have to sell.

Watch out for swings: This reference has an above-average volatility of 134.4 percent. In concrete terms: the price can move by several hundred euros within a few weeks. Check the current value before buying or selling — old listings or auction results from two months ago are of little help.

What to look out for when buying?

  • Authenticity: The serial number and reference on the case must match the papers. A professional authenticity check of the Rolex Oysterdate Precision reliably rules out counterfeits.
  • Condition: Check scratches on the case and bezel — professional refurbishment can leave traces.
  • Service history: A documented service by the manufacturer or a certified watchmaker increases the value.
  • Scope of delivery: Box, papers and warranty card make a noticeable price difference on the Oysterdate Precision.
  • Independent certification: The CPS-52 standard covers 52 checkpoints — from the serial number and the timing machine to water resistance. The result is secured on the blockchain and can be verified at any time.

What should I look out for when buying a Rolex Oysterdate Precision?
The key things to check when buying a Rolex Oysterdate Precision are: 1) that the serial number and reference match the papers, 2) the condition of the case and bezel (scratches, signs of polishing), 3) completeness of box and warranty card (a 10–15 % price premium for a full set), 4) a documented service history, 5) an independent authenticity check — advisable from a purchase price of 5,000 EUR.

With a Rolex, counterfeits can usually be spotted from several details: the weight and material quality of the case, the precise execution of the bezel and dial, correctly engraved serial numbers at the prescribed depth, and the behaviour of the movement. A forensic authenticity check to the CPS-52 standard examines 52 individual points and is the most reliable method — especially for purchases over 10,000 EUR.
Where can I sell a Rolex Oysterdate Precision Ref. 6694?
There are several channels for selling a Rolex Oysterdate Precision: 1) specialist online dealers (Chrono24, Watchfinder, Wempe, Chronext) — fast, but with a 10–20 % margin deduction, 2) auction houses (Phillips, Christie's, Sotheby's) — higher proceeds possible, takes 3–6 months, 3) private sale (classifieds, WatchUSeek) — highest proceeds, but more effort and fraud risk. In our experience a ChronoCheck valuation report raises the achieved sale price by 5–10 %.
