Rolex introduces the Lady-Datejust Ref. 69173 in 1984 as the successor to the four-digit Ref. 6917. The most obvious technical leap: sapphire crystal replaces the old acrylic, and the new Caliber 2135 brings quickset date, a feature the predecessor lacked. Collectors today know the model under names like Lady-Datejust Two-Tone or simply the 691 Lady DJ, typically in a 26-millimeter case with a fluted 18-karat gold bezel.
## 1985: A Dial for the Datejust's 40th Birthday
A year later, in 1985, Rolex marks the Datejust line's 40th anniversary with a special edition featuring a repeating monogram pattern, the so-called Jubilee Anniversary Dial. It joins eleven other documented dial variants of the 69173, ranging from Silver/White Baton and Champagne Roman to the Factory Diamond Dial with diamond hour markers and the Lapis Lazuli version set with diamonds.
## 1993 to 1999: Lume, Clasp, and the End of Production
Around 1993, Rolex switches the 69173 from tritium to LumiNova, identifiable by the T SWISS T or T<25 markings on early dials. 1995 brings the Crownclasp on the Jubilee bracelet 62523H, replacing the simple fold-over clasp and giving later examples with a concealed clasp a noticeably slimmer profile. Production of the 69173 ends in 1999: the 31-jewel Caliber 2235 with Parachrom hairspring takes over in the visually identical Ref. 79173, before Rolex introduces the six-digit 179173 shortly after.
Brand profile: Rolex
Rolex is the most counterfeited watch brand in the world. Super-clones (VSF, ARF, Clean — the latter inactive since the 07/2025 raid, with only old stock still circulating) reach 95%+ similarity. Authenticity can almost always only be identified through micro-details and caliber behavior.
- Case back: ALWAYS solid and closed — any display window means it's definitely fake (exception: vintage Ref. 6085 only)
- Minute hand length: genuine Rolex minute hands end EXACTLY at the minute chapter ring. 1 mm too long = fake. The strongest VSF tell.
- Seconds hand: smooth sweep without any hesitation — the slightest tick-tock motion means it's fake
- Cyclops lens (on Date models): must magnify exactly 2.5×, with the date filling almost the entire window
Serial number format: Since 2010, a random alphanumeric combination (e.g. 'G3M9K721'). 2000-2010: a letter plus 6-7 digits. Serial number engraved on the rehaut at 6 o'clock (from ~2005). Older models: between the lug shoulders at 6 o'clock on the case.
