The Zenith Ref. 97.9100.9004/02.I001 — known in collector circles as the "Defy Extreme Black" or "Defy Extreme Titan Noir" — hit the market in autumn 2021, alongside two sibling references that Zenith unveiled all at once. Three references in one go: the 95.9100.9004/01.I001 in Brushed/Polished Tricolor, the 87.9100.9004/03.I001 in titanium with rose gold accents, and the 97 in fully micro-blasted black titanium. All three powered by the El Primero 9004, housed in a 45 mm case with 200 metres of water resistance.
## What the "97" Prefix in the Reference Tells You
Within the Defy Extreme family, the "97" prefix designates the black titanium finish — micro-blasted throughout, free of any polished elements, resolutely matte. That sets the 97 fundamentally apart from the 95 (mixed surfaces, three colours on the dial) and the 87 (partial rose gold applications). The El Primero 9004 measures mechanically to 1/100th of a second — hence the "1/100 Extreme" shorthand in collector circles — a feat no other production chronograph at this price point achieved in 2021.
## What Changed in the Line During 2022 — and What Didn't
During 2022, Zenith expanded the Defy Extreme family in two new directions: a carbon variant under reference 10.9100.9004/22.I200 with a different strap-set code, and the Chroma Limited Editions featuring ceramic elements under model number 9113. The core reference 97.9100.9004/02.I001 remained untouched — case, calibre, and reference number identical since its 2021 launch.

Zenith is a Swiss luxury watch brand in the upper segment (3.000–50.000+ EUR), best known for the legendary El Primero caliber. The most commonly counterfeited pieces are El Primero chronographs and Defy models. Fakes range from cheap quartz variants to super clones built on modified Valjoux movements.
- El Primero caliber: The genuine article beats at 36.000 vph (5 Hz, 10 ticks/second); fakes typically run at 28.800 vph (4 Hz). The seconds hand must sweep with extreme fluidity, with virtually no visible stepping.
- Dial guillochage: On Defy and Elite models the guillochage must be precise, deep, and even. Fakes often feature flat, irregular, or printed patterns.
- Star in the logo: The Zenith star above the wordmark must be perfectly symmetrical with sharp, even points. Fakes display asymmetric or sloppily applied stars.
- Case finishing and polish: Genuine Zenith watches have flawless finishing with crisp transitions between brushed and polished surfaces. Fakes show uneven transitions and rounded edges.
Serial number format: Modern Zenith serial numbers are alphanumeric (e.g. A12345678) and are located between the lugs at 6 o'clock on the caseback, engraved with machine precision. Older models carry numeric-only serials. The reference number appears separately on the caseback or papers in the format XX.XXXX.XXX.
