Serial numbers
- random – random (2012–2020) — From approx. 2011 onward, Rolex uses exclusively scrambled (random) 8-digit alphanumeric serial numbers. Dating a watch by serial number is no longer possible — only the Rolex warranty card documents the sale date. On the 114060, the number is engraved on the rehaut (inner bezel ring) at 6 o'clock, no longer between the lugs.
The Rolex Submariner 114060 — known among collectors as the "No-Date Sub" or "Clean Sub" — launched in 2012, succeeding the 14060M. The changes were immediately visible: a black Cerachrom ceramic bezel in place of aluminium, Maxi Case, Maxi Dial, and Chromalight lume that has glowed blue ever since rather than green. A rehaut engraving and Glidelock clasp with a 5 mm wetsuit extension joined the lineup, with the 97200 bracelet and SEL 593 completing the package. For many dealers, this was the most compelling Submariner generation in years.
## Eight Years in Production, Then Gone
From 2012 through September 2020, the 114060 was Rolex's clearest statement on a no-date sports watch. Then the 124060 arrived — 0.6 mm more in diameter (40.6 mm total), lugs widened by 1 mm to 21 mm, and the Cal. 3230 with 70 hours of power reserve instead of 48. Those changes may sound incremental, but they instantly turned the 114060 into the most coveted last 40 mm ceramic no-date Sub in the Rolex portfolio.
## What the Cal. 3130 Brings to the Table
The Cal. 3130 sits in the case without a date mechanism — and that is precisely the reason for the "Clean Dial" that has polarised collectors since 2012. The black Maxi dial carries no date window and no extra hand; the Chromalight lume compensates by glowing blue in the dark, longer and more evenly than the green lume of earlier references. Scratches that blacken an aluminium bezel over a decade leave the Cerachrom version completely unscathed. Anyone evaluating a pre-owned 114060 on the market should pay close attention to exactly this point: the bezel is a reliable indicator of age and care history.
Brand profile: Rolex
Rolex is the most counterfeited watch brand in the world. Super-clones (VSF, ARF, Clean — the latter inactive since the 07/2025 raid, with only old stock still circulating) reach 95%+ similarity. Authenticity can almost always only be identified through micro-details and caliber behavior.
Key authenticity features
- Case back: ALWAYS solid and closed — any display window means it's definitely fake (exception: vintage Ref. 6085 only)
- Minute hand length: genuine Rolex minute hands end EXACTLY at the minute chapter ring. 1 mm too long = fake. The strongest VSF tell.
- Seconds hand: smooth sweep without any hesitation — the slightest tick-tock motion means it's fake
- Cyclops lens (on Date models): must magnify exactly 2.5×, with the date filling almost the entire window
Serial number format: Since 2010, a random alphanumeric combination (e.g. 'G3M9K721'). 2000-2010: a letter plus 6-7 digits. Serial number engraved on the rehaut at 6 o'clock (from ~2005). Older models: between the lug shoulders at 6 o'clock on the case.
Buying guide: Rolex Submariner (No Date)
Market situation and price range
At $14,681 the Submariner (No Date) sits in a segment where first owners sell regularly — clean pieces with box and papers are not uncommon. The jump from "good" to "very good" usually costs 1,000 to 2,000 euros more at purchase. You get that premium back on resale if the condition is preserved.
Where the price stands
The price of the Submariner (No Date) has risen by +24.0% over the past four months. Anyone selling now hits a good window. If you want to buy: no need to wait — the market is currently more hot than cold, and a clear end to the trend is not in sight.
Watch out for swings: This reference has an above-average volatility of 58.2 percent. In concrete terms: the price can move by several hundred euros within a few weeks. Check the current value before buying or selling — old listings or auction results from two months ago are of little help.
What to look out for when buying?
- Authenticity: The serial number and reference on the case must match the papers. A professional authenticity check of the Rolex Submariner (No Date) reliably rules out counterfeits.
- Condition: Check scratches on the case and bezel — professional refurbishment can leave traces.
- Service history: A documented service by the manufacturer or a certified watchmaker increases the value.
- Scope of delivery: Box, papers and warranty card make a noticeable price difference on the Submariner (No Date).
- Independent certification: The CPS-52 standard covers 52 checkpoints — from the serial number and the timing machine to water resistance. The result is secured on the blockchain and can be verified at any time.
