ℹ️ 1-month trend

Price change over the past 30 days. Shows the short-term market movement — relevant if you want to buy or sell soon.

ℹ️ 4-month trend

The central metric behind the momentum score. It filters out short-term swings and shows the true, medium-term market trend of this reference.

  • Liquidity (25 pts) — number of active live listings.

  • Source robustness (15 pts) — number of independent market sources.
  • A · 75+ Trend is right, liquidity good, data broad.
  • B · 55–74 Solid, but one component weaker.
  • C · 35–54 Average, volatility or market breadth weigh on it.
  • D · below 35 Downward or too little data — a collector's piece.

## 1959: The First Submariner with Crown Guards

The Rolex Ref. 5512 is the mother of all modern Submariners — and that is meant quite literally. When Rolex introduced the reference in 1959, it was the very first Submariner to feature crown guards. Early examples came fitted with angular Square Crown Guards (SCG): fewer than 100 of these SCG watches are known to survive today, and fewer than 30 of the Eagle Beak transition pieces that bridge the gap between the SCG and the later rounded guards. Anyone who holds one of these early transitional examples in original condition holds one of the rarest chapters in all of Submariner history.

## Why the Four-Liner Means More Than Just Four Lines of Text

From 1961, the 5512 received COSC chronometer certification and gained the four-line SCOC dial — the defining distinction from its sister reference, the 5513, which never carried chronometer certification. The movement evolved from caliber 1530 through 1560 to the Cal. 1570, beating at 19,800 vibrations per hour and gaining hacking seconds from 1972 onward. Fifteen documented collector variants — from the Ghost Bezel to the Maxi Dial — reveal just how much developmental history is packed into this single reference.

## From Gilt Dial to Maxi Dial: 20 Years of Production

Gilt dials were produced through approximately 1967, followed by matte versions with gradual transitional overlap across those years. In 1977, Maxi Dials arrived with their enlarged lume plots across three generations — the Mk3 Maxi is considered the rarest 5512 variant of all. Alongside this, sometime between 1967 and 1969 the depth rating switched from Meters First to Feet First, a move aimed squarely at the US market. Production ended in 1979 at serial number 5,700,000+, with the Ref. 14060 taking over as the chronometer-certified no-date Submariner.

Brand profile: Rolex

Rolex is the most counterfeited watch brand in the world. Super-clones (VSF, ARF, Clean — the latter inactive after a raid in 07/2025, only old stock remaining) achieve 95%+ similarity. Authenticity is almost always detectable only via micro-details + movement behavior.

Key authenticity features
  • Case back: ALWAYS solid and closed — any display window = definitely fake (exception: Vintage Ref. 6085 only)
  • Minute hand length: genuine Rolex minute hands end EXACTLY at the minute chapter ring. 1 mm too long = fake. Strongest VSF tell.
  • Seconds hand: smooth sweep without any hesitation — the slightest tick = fake
  • Cyclops lens (on date models): must magnify exactly 2.5×, date fills almost the entire window

Serial number format: Since 2010: random alphanumeric combination (e.g. 'G3M9K721'). 2000–2010: letter + 6–7 digits. Serial number engraved on the rehaut at 6 o'clock (from ~2005). Older models: between the lugs at 6 o'clock on the case.

Buying guide: Rolex Submariner (No Date)

What drives the price here

At $36,434 the watch sells well if the condition is right. A market rule of thumb: a complete set with box, papers and warranty card brings 10 to 15 percent more than the bare watch. Buying without papers can pay off, but you take the same discount again later when you resell.

Watch out for swings: This reference has an above-average volatility of 185.6 percent. In concrete terms: the price can move by several hundred euros within a few weeks. Check the current value before buying or selling — old listings or auction results from two months ago are of little help.

What to look out for when buying?

  • Authenticity: The serial number and reference on the case must match the papers. A professional authenticity check of the Rolex Submariner (No Date) reliably rules out counterfeits.
  • Condition: Check scratches on the case and bezel — professional refurbishment can leave traces.
  • Service history: A documented service by the manufacturer or a certified watchmaker increases the value.
  • Scope of delivery: Box, papers and warranty card make a noticeable price difference on the Submariner (No Date).
  • Independent certification: The CPS-52 standard covers 52 checkpoints — from the serial number and the timing machine to water resistance. The result is secured on the blockchain and can be verified at any time.

In our experience a ChronoCheck valuation report raises the achieved sale price by 5–10 %.
