- 516.000 – 1.100.000 (1960–1965) — Main production phase 1 with Cal. 1565. Alpha hands through approx. 643.000 (1961), baton hands thereafter.
- 1.100.000 – 2.241.882 (1965–1970) — Transition to Cal. 1575. First Sigma dials.
- 2.241.882 – 5.008.000 (1970–1977) — Late production 1603. Cal. 1575 with hacking from approx. S/N 2.589.295 (1972). Last Pie-Pan examples toward the end of this range.
The Rolex Datejust 1603 is no ordinary steel Datejust. The reference ran from 1959 to 1977 — 18 years during which Rolex changed the movement twice and turned the dial into the real collector story.
## The Dial Decides the Price
Early examples come with the Pie-Pan dial: concave, sunken in silver or blue, with a play of light no later Datejust has ever replicated. Paired with the engine-turned steel bezel, this is the classic configuration buyers actively seek out today. The "Wide Boy" carries broad indices without an applied chapter ring — collectors pay considerably more for this variant than for the later Sigma dials that appeared from 1969 onward, marked by σ symbols at 6 o'clock to denote 18-karat gold indices. The double-signed Tiffany dial is widely regarded as a category of its own.
## Two Calibers, One Seamless Transition
From 1959, the 1603 ran on Cal. 1565 at 18,000 beats per hour. Around 1965, Cal. 1575 arrived with 19,800 bph and 48 hours of power reserve — the bridge has carried the engraving "1570" ever since. The transition was not clean-cut; individual 1565 cases continued to appear even after 1965. From serial number 2,589,295 — approximately 1972 — the seconds hand stops when the crown is pulled. Those who set their watch to the minute every day still appreciate this detail.
## Why 1977 Was the End
The last serial numbers sit around 5,008,000. The successor 16030 brought a Quickset date and a flat dial — no more Pie-Pan. What disappeared with it is exactly what makes an early 1603 instantly recognizable in photographs: that curved depth no successor has ever matched.
Brand profile: Rolex
Rolex is the most counterfeited watch brand in the world. Super-clones (VSF, ARF, Clean — the latter inactive after a raid in 07/2025, only old stock remaining) achieve 95%+ similarity. Authenticity is almost always detectable only via micro-details + movement behavior.
Key authenticity features
- Case back: ALWAYS solid and closed — any display window = definitely fake (exception: Vintage Ref. 6085 only)
- Minute hand length: genuine Rolex minute hands end EXACTLY at the minute chapter ring. 1 mm too long = fake. Strongest VSF tell.
- Seconds hand: smooth sweep without any hesitation — the slightest tick = fake
- Cyclops lens (on date models): must magnify exactly 2.5×, date fills almost the entire window
Serial number format: Since 2010: random alphanumeric combination (e.g. 'G3M9K721'). 2000–2010: letter + 6–7 digits. Serial number engraved on the rehaut at 6 o'clock (from ~2005). Older models: between the lugs at 6 o'clock on the case.
Buying guide: Rolex Datejust 36
Entry into Rolex
At $5,597 this reference is one of the more affordable ways to wear a Rolex on your wrist. That is precisely why many pieces have already passed through several hands — condition varies accordingly. Buyers here should pay particular attention to service history and honest photos from the seller.
Watch out for swings: This reference has an above-average volatility of 72.3 percent. In concrete terms: the price can move by several hundred euros within a few weeks. Check the current value before buying or selling — old listings or auction results from two months ago are of little help.
What to look out for when buying?
- Authenticity: The serial number and reference on the case must match the papers. A professional authenticity check of the Rolex Datejust 36 reliably rules out counterfeits.

- Service history: A documented service by the manufacturer or a certified watchmaker increases the value.
- Scope of delivery: Box, papers and warranty card make a noticeable price difference on the Datejust 36.
- Independent certification: The CPS-52 standard covers 52 checkpoints — from the serial number and the timing machine to water resistance. The result is secured on the blockchain and can be verified at any time.

What should I look out for when buying a Rolex Datejust 36?
The key things to check when buying a Rolex Datejust 36 are: 1) that the serial number and reference match the papers, 2) the condition of the case and bezel (scratches, signs of polishing), 3) completeness of box and warranty card (a 10–15 % price premium for a full set), 4) a documented service history, 5) an independent authenticity check — advisable from a purchase price of 5,000 EUR.
How do I tell whether a Rolex Datejust 36 is genuine?
With a Rolex, counterfeits can usually be spotted from several details: the weight and material quality of the case, the precise execution of the bezel and dial, correctly engraved serial numbers at the prescribed depth, and the behaviour of the movement. A forensic authenticity check to the CPS-52 standard examines 52 individual points and is the most reliable method — especially for purchases over 10,000 EUR.
Where can I sell a Rolex Datejust 36 Ref. 1603?
There are several channels for selling a Rolex Datejust 36: 1) specialist online dealers (Chrono24, Watchfinder, Wempe, Chronext) — fast, but with a 10–20 % margin deduction, 2) auction houses (Phillips, Christie's, Sotheby's) — higher proceeds possible, takes 3–6 months, 3) private sale (classifieds, WatchUSeek) — highest proceeds, but more effort and fraud risk. In our experience a ChronoCheck valuation report raises the achieved sale price by 5–10 %.
