## Twelve Years of Production, Four Dial Generations
In 1988, the Ref. 16200 replaces the outgoing 16030. Cal. 3135 instead of Cal. 3035, sapphire crystal instead of acrylic — the leap is bigger than the reference number lets on. Alongside it launch the siblings 16234 in fluted white gold and 16220 in fluted steel, all three sharing the same movement. The earliest examples still carry tritium dials and lug holes at the strap attachments, a detail collectors still check first thing when a watch lands on their wrist.
## The Break Mid-Production
In 1994, Rolex begins phasing out lug holes across its model range, with no clean cut-off date. Four years later, in 1998, comes the next shift: tritium gives way to photoluminescent Luminova, and the dial now reads simply "SWISS" at six o'clock. That window is so brief, barely a year, that the resulting Swiss-only dials rank among the most sought-after variants in the whole 162xx family. 1999 brings SuperLuminova, marked "SWISS MADE," with the changeover spanning both U and A serial numbers.
## Nine Dials, One Smooth Bezel
The 16200 keeps its smooth bezel throughout — no fluting, no diamonds, understatement as a principle. Where it does vary is the dial: silver baton, ivory Jubilee with Roman numerals, champagne sunburst, salmon Roman, blue chameleon. Nine documented variants for a single reference is a lot for a Datejust with no special status behind it. Production ends in 2000, with the six-digit 116200 taking over, fitted with a solid-link bracelet and the same Cal. 3135.
Brand profile: Rolex
Rolex is the most counterfeited watch brand in the world. Super-clones (VSF, ARF, Clean — the latter inactive since the 07/2025 raid, with only old stock still circulating) reach 95%+ similarity. Authenticity can almost always only be identified through micro-details and caliber behavior.
Key authenticity features
- Case back: ALWAYS solid and closed — any display window means it's definitely fake (exception: vintage Ref. 6085 only)
- Minute hand length: genuine Rolex minute hands end EXACTLY at the minute chapter ring. 1 mm too long = fake. The strongest VSF tell.
- Seconds hand: smooth sweep without any hesitation — the slightest tick-tock motion means it's fake
- Cyclops lens (on Date models): must magnify exactly 2.5×, with the date filling almost the entire window
Serial number format: Since 2010, a random alphanumeric combination (e.g. 'G3M9K721'). 2000-2010: a letter plus 6-7 digits. Serial number engraved on the rehaut at 6 o'clock (from ~2005). Older models: between the lug shoulders at 6 o'clock on the case.

What should I look out for when buying a Rolex Datejust 36?
The key things to check when buying a Rolex Datejust 36 are: 1) that the serial number and reference match the papers, 2) the condition of the case and bezel (scratches, signs of polishing), 3) completeness of box and warranty card (a 10–15 % price premium for a full set), 4) a documented service history, 5) an independent authenticity check — advisable from a purchase price of 5,000 EUR.
How do I tell whether a Rolex Datejust 36 is genuine?
With a Rolex, counterfeits can usually be spotted from several details: the weight and material quality of the case, the precise execution of the bezel and dial, correctly engraved serial numbers at the prescribed depth, and the behaviour of the movement. A forensic authenticity check to the CPS-52 standard examines 52 individual points and is the most reliable method — especially for purchases over 10,000 EUR.
Where can I sell a Rolex Datejust 36 Ref. 16200?
There are several channels for selling a Rolex Datejust 36: 1) specialist online dealers (Chrono24, Watchfinder, Wempe, Chronext) — fast, but with a 10–20 % margin deduction, 2) auction houses (Phillips, Christie's, Sotheby's) — higher proceeds possible, takes 3–6 months, 3) private sale (classifieds, WatchUSeek) — highest proceeds, but more effort and fraud risk. In our experience a ChronoCheck valuation report raises the achieved sale price by 5–10 %.
