## The successor that redefined the two-tone line
In 1988, reference 16233 replaced the 16013, and with it, acrylic crystal disappeared from the Rolesor Datejust for good. Sapphire crystal took over from Plexiglas, the caliber 3135 succeeded the 3035, and a Twinlock crown replaced the old double-gasket system. Collectors gave it a nickname of its own: Wall Street Rolex, sometimes American Psycho Watch, named for the era when two-tone gold was the uniform of the trading floor.
## The dial details that drive the price
In 1998, the signature briefly shifted from "Swiss – t < 25" to a plain "Swiss," a transitional phase that's estimated to account for under 5 percent of total production. A year later, in 1999, "Swiss Made" appeared on the dial, tritium gave way to Super-LumiNova, and serials moved into the A series. Find a 16233 with an A-series serial and green rather than cream lume, and you're holding a piece from that exact narrow window. Twelve dial variants are catalogued, from the Champagne Sunburst Baton to the black Diamond Dial, all framed by the fluted 18-karat gold bezel that marks the series.
## The end of an era around 2005
Around 2005, the 16233 was phased out, and the six-digit 116233 took over with a fully polished case and solid-link bracelet. New to the successor was the engraved rehaut stamped "ROLEXROLEXROLEX," a detail that sets it apart from the 16233 at a glance. Nearly two decades of production went into the 16233, with the caliber 3135 as its constant core across every dial and serial variant.
Brand profile: Rolex
Rolex is the most counterfeited watch brand in the world. Super-clones (VSF, ARF, Clean — the latter inactive since the 07/2025 raid, with only old stock still circulating) reach 95%+ similarity. Authenticity can almost always only be identified through micro-details and caliber behavior.

- Minute hand length: genuine Rolex minute hands end EXACTLY at the minute chapter ring. 1 mm too long = fake. The strongest VSF tell.

- Cyclops lens (on Date models): must magnify exactly 2.5×, with the date filling almost the entire window
Serial number format: Since 2010, a random alphanumeric combination (e.g. 'G3M9K721'). 2000-2010: a letter plus 6-7 digits. Serial number engraved on the rehaut at 6 o'clock (from ~2005). Older models: between the lug shoulders at 6 o'clock on the case.
