In 1988, the Ref. 16233 replaces its predecessor, the 16013, and instantly becomes the most-worn Rolesor Datejust of its generation. Collectors still call it the Yuppie Rolex or the American Psycho Rolex, after the watch Patrick Bateman wears as a status symbol in the novel. The 16233G denotes the gold-bezel version, with a 36mm case in a steel-and-gold combination.
## 1988: Sapphire Crystal Replaces Plexi, Caliber 3135 Takes Over
With the 16233, Rolex fits a sapphire crystal in the two-tone Datejust line for the first time, replacing the scratch-prone acrylic glass. At the same time, Caliber 3135 arrives and retires the old 3035. 31 jewels instead of 27, a full balance bridge instead of individual cocks, plus a larger balance wheel for a smoother run. This caliber goes on to serve as the Datejust family's workhorse for more than two decades.
## The Bezel: 18 Karat Only, No Budget Option Left
On the 16013, the bezel could be had in either 14 or 18 karat gold. Rolex drops that choice entirely in 1988. Every 16233G carries a fluted 18-karat yellow gold bezel, with no lower-tier alternative.
## Tritium Until 1998, Then Super-LumiNova
Around a decade after launch comes the second major shift: Swiss regulation forces Rolex to replace the radioactive tritium on the hands and hour markers with Super-LumiNova, with the transition unfolding gradually across 1998 and 1999. Visually, the difference only shows under UV light — tritium yellows with age, while Super-LumiNova stays white.
## Twelve Dials, From Champagne Sunburst to Diamond Dial
Buyers will find the 16233G in twelve documented dial variants, ranging from the classic champagne sunburst to tapisserie and linen textures to diamond markers in black or champagne. Starting with the 2000 model year, a Parachrom Blue hairspring made of niobium-zirconium joins Caliber 3135, ten times more shock-resistant and antimagnetic — though this only applies to examples from the AB serial number onward.
Brand profile: Rolex
Rolex is the most counterfeited watch brand in the world. Super-clones (VSF, ARF, Clean — the latter inactive since the 07/2025 raid, with only old stock still circulating) reach 95%+ similarity. Authenticity can almost always only be identified through micro-details and caliber behavior.
- Case back: ALWAYS solid and closed — any display window means it's definitely fake (exception: vintage Ref. 6085 only)
- Minute hand length: genuine Rolex minute hands end EXACTLY at the minute chapter ring. 1 mm too long = fake. The strongest VSF tell.
- Seconds hand: smooth sweep without any hesitation — the slightest tick-tock motion means it's fake
- Cyclops lens (on Date models): must magnify exactly 2.5×, with the date filling almost the entire window
Serial number format: Since 2010, a random alphanumeric combination (e.g. 'G3M9K721'). 2000-2010: a letter plus 6-7 digits. Serial number engraved on the rehaut at 6 o'clock (from ~2005). Older models: between the lug shoulders at 6 o'clock on the case.
