## Baselworld 2015: the day the Day-Date got a new heart

Rolex unveiled the Ref. 228239 in March 2015 as the successor to the 218239. The real overhaul is hidden inside the caliber 3255 — Chronergy escapement, Parachrom hairspring, 70 hours of power reserve instead of the 48 hours in the old 3156. In the workshop, this shows up immediately during a service: a different balance wheel, different behavior when resetting the regulating organ. The launch dial carries the reference 228239-0001, silver guilloché with applied baton indices. Collectors simply call it the Silver Stripe, while in forums the watch as a whole goes by White Gold President 40, or DD40 WG for short.

## The fluted bezel stays, the dial moves on

What hasn't changed since 2015 is the fluted 18-karat white gold bezel, the signature trait of the President line. What has changed is the dial lineup. At Watches & Wonders 2022, Rolex expanded the range with Onyx, Meteorite, and several shades of green — including the Olive Green Roman, internal number 228239-0033, with Roman numerals instead of baton indices.

## 2024 brings mother-of-pearl to the Day-Date 40

Two years later, again at Watches & Wonders, came two genuine newcomers: the 228239-0076 with a Blue Ombré gradient and the 228239-0078 with a white mother-of-pearl dial and ten baguette-diamond indices. The latter is the first MOP execution the 228239 has ever received. For valuation purposes when buying, this means checking dial code and production year together — nine years of model updates separate 0001 from 0078, and secondary-market demand varies accordingly.

Brand profile: Rolex

Rolex is the most counterfeited watch brand in the world. Super-clones (VSF, ARF, Clean — the latter inactive since a 07/2025 raid, only old stock remains) reach 95%+ similarity. Authenticity is almost always only identifiable through micro-details and caliber behavior.

Key authenticity features
  • Case back: ALWAYS solid and closed — any viewing window means definitely fake (exception: vintage Ref. 6085 only)
  • Minute hand length: genuine Rolex minute hands end EXACTLY at the minute chapter ring. 1 mm too long = fake. The strongest VSF tell.
  • Seconds hand: smooth sweep without any hesitation — the slightest tick-tock means fake
  • Cyclops lens (on Date models): must magnify exactly 2.5×, the date should nearly fill the entire window

Serial number format: Since 2010, a random alphanumeric combination (e.g. 'G3M9K721'). 2000-2010: a letter plus 6-7 digits. Serial number engraved on the rehaut at 6 o'clock (from ~2005 on). Older models: between the lug holes at 6 o'clock on the case.

Buying guide: Rolex Day-Date 40

What drives the price here

At $57,942 the watch sells well if the condition is right. A market rule of thumb: a complete set with box, papers and warranty card brings 10 to 15 percent more than the bare watch. Buying without papers can pay off, but you take the same discount again later when you resell.

Where the price stands

The price of the Day-Date 40 has risen by +10.1% over the past four months. Anyone selling now hits a good window. If you want to buy: no need to wait — the market is currently more hot than cold, and a clear end to the trend is not in sight.

Watch out for swings: This reference has an above-average volatility of 66.3 percent. In concrete terms: the price can move by several hundred euros within a few weeks. Check the current value before buying or selling — old listings or auction results from two months ago are of little help.

What to look out for when buying?

  • Authenticity: The serial number and reference on the case must match the papers. A professional authenticity check of the Rolex Day-Date 40 reliably rules out counterfeits.
  • Condition: Check scratches on the case and bezel — professional refurbishment can leave traces.
  • Service history: A documented service by the manufacturer or a certified watchmaker increases the value.
  • Scope of delivery: Box, papers and warranty card make a noticeable price difference on the Day-Date 40.
  • Independent certification: The CPS-52 standard covers 52 checkpoints — from the serial number and the timing machine to water resistance. The result is secured on the blockchain and can be verified at any time.

What should I look out for when buying a Rolex Day-Date 40?
The key things to check when buying a Rolex Day-Date 40 are: 1) that the serial number and reference match the papers, 2) the condition of the case and bezel (scratches, signs of polishing), 3) completeness of box and warranty card (a 10–15 % price premium for a full set), 4) a documented service history, 5) an independent authenticity check — advisable from a purchase price of 5,000 EUR.
How do I tell whether a Rolex Day-Date 40 is genuine?
With a Rolex, counterfeits can usually be spotted from several details: the weight and material quality of the case, the precise execution of the bezel and dial, correctly engraved serial numbers at the prescribed depth, and the behaviour of the movement. A forensic authenticity check to the CPS-52 standard examines 52 individual points and is the most reliable method — especially for purchases over 10,000 EUR.
Where can I sell a Rolex Day-Date 40 Ref. 228239?
There are several channels for selling a Rolex Day-Date 40: 1) specialist online dealers (Chrono24, Watchfinder, Wempe, Chronext) — fast, but with a 10–20 % margin deduction, 2) auction houses (Phillips, Christie's, Sotheby's) — higher proceeds possible, takes 3–6 months, 3) private sale (classifieds, WatchUSeek) — highest proceeds, but more effort and fraud risk. In our experience a ChronoCheck valuation report raises the achieved sale price by 5–10 %.
